The Old Vine - a symbol of friendship, connection and the region
The old vine, Žametovka (also known as Ametovka and Kavčina črna), is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest wine variety in the world. It is a symbol of the rich wine tradition of Maribor, Styria and Slovenia.
The old vine has its roots all over the world, making it a symbol of friendship and mutual connection. Every year, the city of Maribor, at an important protocolary event, donates its its valuable vine grafts to the partner municipalities and institutions around Slovenia and the world. The roots of the descendants of the honourable lady are thus intertwined on four continents and in as many as 24 countries, recently also including Japan. The symbolic annual wine production (35 to 55 kg) is bottled in 2.5 dl bottles, which represent a valuable protocol gift, with only 100 filled annually.
The oldest vine grape in the world is located in the old town along the Drava River, only 200 meters walk from the Maribor Hotel, Garden Rooms. As the proud owner of the Old Grapes grafts, we will also ceremoniously plant it in the green garden of the Maribor Hotel, Garden Rooms.
