Plague sign with Rotovž on the main square
The plague first appeared in Maribor in the 17th century, killing a third of the population. In gratitude for the cessation of the plague, the inhabitants of Maribor erected a plague sign in 1681 - a pillar with the image of Mary and six intercessor saints. In the 18th century, it was replaced by the present one, which is the work of Jožef Straub.
The former Rotovška courtyard with stables on the site where the city administration building now stands was also a market place where farmers sold flour and hay. The square bore various names, and in 1876 it was renamed Rathausplatz (Rotovški trg), which has been preserved to this day. In 1515, a town hall was built on the square - Rotovž with a beautiful balcony with a relief depicting the town coat of arms, surrounded by two lions and the year 1565.

The cathedral
The cathedral church on Slomškov trg is a long-standing religious center of the city, where all the most important services take place. The church was originally built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style, but we can find creations from the Gothic and Baroque periods in it, as the church burned down several times. In recent years, it has been most recognizable due to Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, the first Slovenian saint to have his own grave in the church. The cathedral is the seat of the Maribor Archdiocese. In the church bell tower from the end of the 18th century, you can see an exhibition entitled The Watchtower on the Tower, which shows the former apartment and service of the fire guard who lived at the top of the cathedral bell tower.
